If you calculated your DOTS score and got 300, 350, 400 or even 500 points,
the obvious next question is: Is that a good DOTS score?
The short answer is that there is no official universal DOTS classification system
that defines a particular score as beginner, intermediate, advanced or elite.
DOTS is a bodyweight-adjusted scoring formula. Its purpose is to compare powerlifting
performances across different bodyweights — not to assign training levels.
Still, DOTS scores can be extremely useful for putting your performance into context.
competitive total, scores around 350–400 are increasingly strong,
450+ represents a very high level of relative strength and
500+ is an exceptional performance.
Practical DOTS Milestones
DOTS itself does not define beginner, intermediate, advanced or elite categories.
The numbers below are useful reference milestones, not statistical
percentiles, federation standards or qualification levels.

These descriptions are editorial reference points designed to help readers interpret
the scale. They are not derived from a percentile dataset and should
not be treated as official classifications. The same DOTS score can represent a very
different placing at a local meet, national championship or international event.
The best way to compare performances is always to use the
same scoring formula, equipment category and competition context.

What Does a 300 DOTS Score Mean?
A 300 DOTS score is a useful milestone for developing powerlifters.
It shows that the lifter has built a meaningful squat, bench press and deadlift total
relative to bodyweight. It does not automatically mean beginner or intermediate because
training history and competitive populations differ significantly.
For example, a male lifter weighing exactly 83 kg would need approximately
a 445 kg total to reach 300 DOTS.
A female lifter weighing 63 kg would need approximately a
280 kg total.
The important point is that DOTS allows these very different absolute totals to be compared
on a bodyweight-adjusted scale.
Is 350 DOTS Good?
A score of 350 DOTS is a strong milestone for many recreational and
competitive powerlifters.
At 83 kg bodyweight, a male lifter needs approximately a 517.5 kg total
to reach 350 DOTS.
At 63 kg, a female lifter needs approximately a 325 kg total.
Reaching 350 DOTS generally requires substantially more than simply learning the three
competition lifts. It usually represents a well-developed total relative to bodyweight.
Is 400 DOTS Good?
Yes. 400 DOTS is a very strong score.
At this level, bodyweight-adjusted strength is becoming significant even among competitive
powerlifters.
83 kg male: approximately 592.5 kg total = 400 DOTS
63 kg female: approximately 372.5 kg total = 400 DOTS
An 83 kg male totaling 600 kg scores approximately
405.05 DOTS.
A 63 kg female totaling 400 kg scores approximately
430.21 DOTS.
The same numerical DOTS scale can therefore describe performances produced by very
different absolute totals.
What About 450 DOTS?
A 450 DOTS performance is high-level powerlifting.
Scores in this region require a combination of substantial absolute strength and a strong
strength-to-bodyweight relationship.
Approximately 450 DOTS requires:
667.5 kg at 83 kg male bodyweight
417.5 kg at 63 kg female bodyweight
At stronger regional, national and international competitions, scores in this range are
common among competitive lifters, although the exact standard varies considerably between
divisions and federations.
Is 500 DOTS Elite?
A score of 500 DOTS is exceptional.
A 500-point performance requires roughly:
740 kg at 83 kg male bodyweight
465 kg at 63 kg female bodyweight
Scores above 500 are seen among high-level competitive lifters, but reaching 500 DOTS
should not automatically be interpreted as a particular federation's official
elite qualification.
Federations determine rankings and qualification standards according to their own rules.
DOTS itself does not contain an official elite threshold.

A lifter weighing 80.2 kg and a lifter weighing 82.9 kg may compete in the same weight
class under some rules, but their DOTS coefficients are slightly different.

Why Men and Women Need Different Totals for the Same DOTS Score
DOTS uses separate polynomial coefficients for male and female lifters.
The original DOTS formula was developed using powerlifting performance data with the goal
of improving comparisons across bodyweights and providing a practical method for mixed
team scoring.
The score follows the same basic structure:
The polynomial changes depending on sex and bodyweight.
This is why a male and female lifter can lift very different absolute totals yet receive
similar DOTS scores.

A Worked DOTS Example

Example 1: Male Powerlifter
Bodyweight: 83 kg

Using the published male DOTS coefficients:
600 kg total at 83 kg bodyweight ≈ 405.05 DOTS
That puts the performance just above the 400 DOTS milestone.
Example 2: Female Powerlifter
Consider a female powerlifter weighing 63 kg with a
400 kg total.
Using the female DOTS coefficients:
400 kg total at 63 kg bodyweight ≈ 430.21 DOTS
Although the absolute totals are very different, the DOTS formula allows both
performances to be evaluated relative to bodyweight.
What Affects Your DOTS Score?
DOTS directly uses only sex, bodyweight and lifted total.
Age is not part of the DOTS formula. Equipment is not part of the mathematical calculation
either.
That does not mean equipment and competition category should be ignored
when comparing lifters.
A raw total should normally be compared with raw performances. Equipped performances
should be compared in the appropriate equipment category. Age divisions may also have
very different competitive standards.
For the most meaningful progress tracking, compare yourself using the
same formula, similar competition conditions and the same equipment category.
Does Losing Bodyweight Automatically Improve DOTS?
Not necessarily.
Lower bodyweight can improve your DOTS result, but only if you can maintain enough of
your lifting total.
Losing several kilograms while also losing significant squat, bench and deadlift strength
may produce no improvement at all.
This is one reason DOTS can be useful when monitoring a change of weight class:
instead of looking only at your total, you can see whether your
bodyweight-adjusted performance actually improved.
DOTS vs Wilks vs IPF GL Points
DOTS is only one method of comparing powerlifting performances.
Wilks, Wilks 2020 and IPF GL use different formulas and can produce different rankings
from the same performances.
The International Powerlifting Federation uses its own GL scoring system rather than DOTS,
so a DOTS result should never automatically be treated as an official IPF competition score.

So, What Is a Good DOTS Score?
There is no single number that makes someone a “good powerlifter.”
Useful milestone
Significant milestone
High performance
Very high performance
Exceptional performance
The most useful comparison, however, is often with your previous performance.
If you moved from 342 DOTS to 365 DOTS while competing under comparable conditions,
you became stronger relative to your bodyweight.
That tells you more about your progress than an arbitrary label.

Is 300 DOTS good?
A 300 DOTS score is a useful competitive milestone and represents a meaningful total
relative to bodyweight. It is not an official beginner or intermediate boundary.
Is 400 DOTS considered strong?
Yes. A 400 DOTS full-power total represents very strong bodyweight-adjusted strength
for most competitive contexts, although competition level and division still matter.
Is 500 DOTS world class?
500 DOTS is an exceptional score, but DOTS itself does not define an official
“world class” category. International placement depends on federation, division,
equipment and the athletes competing.
Do men and women use the same DOTS formula?
They use the same scoring concept but different polynomial coefficients.
Separate male and female coefficients are used in the DOTS formula.
Does age affect DOTS?
No. Age is not an input in the DOTS formula. Junior or Masters adjustments,
where used, are separate scoring methods.
Does equipment affect DOTS?
Not mathematically. DOTS uses bodyweight and total, but raw and equipped performances
should normally be compared within equivalent equipment categories.
Can I calculate DOTS from gym lifts?
Yes, but a gym total should not be treated as equivalent to an official competition
total unless the lifts meet the relevant competition standards.
Is DOTS the same as IPF GL Points?
No. DOTS and IPF GL are different scoring systems with different formulas.
Always use the scoring method required by your competition.
