How to Calculate a Powerlifting Total

To calculate a powerlifting total, add your best successful squat, bench press and deadlift. Use one result from each discipline in the same unit. For example, a 215 kg squat, 145 kg bench press and 240 kg deadlift produce a 600 kg total.

A worked scorecard

Lift Attempt 1 Attempt 2 Attempt 3 Counted
Squat 200 good 215 good 225 missed 215 kg
Bench 130 good 140 good 145 good 145 kg
Deadlift 220 good 240 missed 240 good 240 kg
The total is 215 + 145 + 240 = 600 kg. The missed 225 kg squat adds nothing. Repeating the deadlift successfully contributes 240 kg once.

Total versus points

A total is a mass. DOTS, Wilks and IPF GL are scores calculated using a formula. Two lifters with the same 600 kg total can receive different bodyweight-adjusted scores. Keep the formula name next to every points value.

What if I miss every attempt in one lift?

Under the IPF three-lift rules, failing to obtain a successful attempt in a discipline prevents a valid three-lift total. A calculator can still add the numbers you type, but this does not turn a partial result into an official total. Other events, such as bench only, have a different scope.

Gym totals are useful, but different

Combining personal bests from different weeks can help track training. Label it as a gym total: it does not demonstrate that all three lifts were achieved under judging on the same competition day. Equipment, commands and bodyweight also matter when comparing results. Try the total and score calculator, then use the attempt worksheet to organise a tentative plan.

Source and scope

The competition description follows the IPF Technical Rules. Always check the current rules of your own federation and event.

What does your powerlifting total mean?

Calculating your total is only the first step. Bodyweight, competition conditions and the individual squat, bench press and deadlift results all provide additional context.
